Historical review:

The third district of the canton of Desamparados still retains eminent folkloric roots, a peculiarity that it shares with other communities of Desamparados (San Antonio and San Miguel), influenced perhaps by its indigenous origin and the influence of the growth of this town, located 8 kilometers to the south Of San José.

From the foundation of this district we know data from 1841, which say that this place came to reside Don Jose Fallas Garbanzo, who with his family, very numerous indeed, was interested in the formation of the small village that later began to be called with him Name of "THE QUARTEL DEL MOLINO", after the arrival of the Spanish Rodrigo de Calderón. Then came other settlers like Don Jose Maria Valverde, Don Miguel Fallas, Don Daniel Mora, Don Rafael Zúñiga, Don Sotero González, etc.

One of the versions that have arisen with respect to the beginning of its colonization, is that mentioned by José Ángel Retana Fallas in his book "History and Progress of a Legendary People", where the author makes mention of a production of the well-known folklorist and producer Cinematographic, Miguel Salguero. This mention discloses a document of 1786, where it is obtained at the beginning of that decade that the "Real Hearing" knew the request made by the Spanish Rodrigo de Calderón, native of Mérida, that resided in Carthage, in terms of taking "possession ", To" right ", of the portion of land to which we allude, with the purpose of installing a mill for the processing of wheat"

The then governor and captain of the province of Costa Rica (dependency of the captaincy of Guatemala), Andrés Arias Maldonado and other witnesses, appeared in the zone where the construction of the rustic industry began, to give official possession to the mentioned European immigrant .

Those "three caballerias de tierra", requested by Rodrigo de Calderón, were gradually populated. The greatest incidence of this phenomenon occurred to the south of the present district.

The first hermitage was built in the year 1877 in wood, thanks to the efforts of the majordomo Don Rafael Abarca and the parish priest of Desamparados Matías Zavaleta.

The names of the Royal Streets and the Machines originated in this way: In 1830 the inhabitants of that place, the family of Rodrigo de Calderón, planted a lot of wheat and also built a mill. Hence the Mill. As for the name of Calle Las Máquinas, it is due that in 1860, Messrs. Pablo Dias, Benedicto Valverde and Vicente Chacón built three sawmills with vertical tape machines, which is why the neighbors called Calle Las Máquinas.

With the construction of the temple, the village of the "Cuartel del Molino", lost its name and in its place began to call that community. Saint John of God.

March 8th of each year. San Juan de Dios is prepared, with happy celebrations to celebrate its patron saint, like the rest of the districts, the typical food is the plate that occupies the table of the settler.
