Historical review:

The first name of this district was La Joya because the land of this place was very fertile. According to some old desamparadeños, the name is due to an observation made by Father Matias Zavaleta, who, seeing that a great number of desamparadeños were thrown to that region of La Joya, said: "They seem to be accounts of the rosary one after another, looking for the sun that More hot them ".

It is believed that the first settlers arrived from Aserri, Heredia, Desamparados and Tibás, as were Fernando Salazar, Don Tomás Cerdas, Don Juan Bautista Quirós (Tibás), Don Bartolo Padilla (San José) and Don Manuel Arias (Heredia).

This region is dedicated to the agricultural field. The main crops are the production of sugar cane, legumes, fruits and cereals.

The district of Rosario is composed of a humble population, simple and full of religious and moral traditions. It is characterized by its collaborating spirit, they are great workers and people full of sympathy and friendship. This and all the towns of the south, located in the foothills of the mountain range of Talamanca, possess great natural beauties and offer a panorama of alpine landscape.

Its first settlers occupied these lands to leave the capital city and to have a territory where to work. Little by little other families joined and at the same time a hermitage was built, where they congregate to give thanks to God for all that they have. There are two curiosities in the district: the Peña del Alumbre, so named for the amount of that substance or place and the waterfall of the creek, more than 10 meters high and a charming appearance. As a reminder of better times and a testimony of the gratitude of the people, virtue of national education and in particular of the district.

They began to populate this district neighbors of the Villa of Desamparados and the district of San Miguel that arrived attracted by the feracity of the virgin earth, with the purpose of making milpas. While they were doing their sowings, they built shelters to sleep in the shelter of the serene and sheltered forest animals and sometimes brought their families to prepare the food and even help them in their tasks.

The harvests were plentiful; The fruits of the first quality and from here they called that place, primitively, "La Joya".

Among the people who were most committed to the development of the village, Don Juan Ureña should be remembered, who put all his efforts into providing a school, where his descendants could be educated.

The school

It was in the year 1881 that the first masters arrived who, for lack of a school building, gave their lessons in private houses, leased by the Canton Municipality to build a building for this purpose, in whose work was already lent its contingent and Built the first school, poorly, just to fill a need. The second school was financed by the government some time later.

Parade of Teachers

The first teachers were Mr. Casimiro Solano and Miss Angelina Solano. In 1882 Don Casimiro and his wife, Dona Isabel de Solano.
