Gabriel Ureña Morales

In addition to being a magnificent teacher, his spirit of progress is present in many other activities, such as being one of the creators of night teaching in Costa Rica and co-founder, among others, of the Vocational College Monseñor Sanabria and the Omar Dengo College .

He was born in Desamparados in 1914. He attended primary school at the Garcia Monge School. He graduated in Humanities at the Lyceum in Costa Rica in 1934. In the following year he began his teaching career as a teacher in San Rafael de Tarrazú. Subsequently he provided similar services in Aserrí. Through special courses for in-service teachers he graduated from Normal teacher in 1937.

He is a founding member of the Association of Graduates in Philosophy and Letters, and of the Association Desamparadeña de Cultura y Asistencia Social ADECAS. His work in the latter has been fundamental for the cultural progress of the canton, because he was concerned to form a publishing house that has published some of the most important books written by the desamparadeños.

In three different periods he has presided over the Academy of Geography and History of Costa Rica. In 1962 he published the study: Presence of Father Matias Zavaleta in Desamparados.
